SAN FRANCISCO HALF MARATHON COMPLETED                                           July 27, 2014

It was great to be part again of my favorite marathon that I have run 5 times.  This was the first half and it was just as enjoyable and challenging.  The highlight is running back and forth over the Golden Gate Bridge.

FINISHED FIRST Roslyn Booster Greg Fried 5K Second Year in a Row

Finished 1st in my age class (55-59) at the Roslyn Booster Greg Fried 5K for the second year in a row.  Results: 1st Place  27:23   8:50 pace

FUNNING DOWN RUNWAY 22L @JFK 5K

This was one crazy run.  Decided to sign up for this race seeing it online.  Turned out to be very different.  Though not a large race (under 1,000), it has a larger appearance.  After check-in we boarded busses and transported through the main entrance to the tarmac and Runway 22.  Running down 22L was amazing.  Straight, flat, jets landing a couple of hundred feet above us and taxiing on Runway 22R for take-off.  Ran straight down to the end and headed back up to the start with a slight curve towards the finish.  Placed 4th in my age category (missed 3rd by 30 sec.).  Honestly, while running these races its hard to ascertain who you are really competing against as far as age is concerned.  Results: Finished 195 out of 963 with a time of 27:09 at an 8:47 pace.

MARINE MARATHON COMPLETED - Washington, D.C Oct 31, 2010

Finished the Marine Marathon in Washington, D.C. with a time of 4:52. It was the largest field, 30,000, that I have ever run in a marathon. It was very hard to get a constant pace going due to the crowded field, runners cutting you off, "walkers" in the way, and fallen runners. But it was truly the most inspiring due to the large supporting crowds and the tour of Washington and all its sights, buildings and memorials. Here is my finish at 5:01:24 (clock time) recorded on video: BRAD's FINISH. This was my fourth marathon in 2010 (Napa, Long Island, San Francisco) and eighth overall since I started doing this crazy thing in 2008. Next up: I'm thinking about Pittsburgh again!

SAN FRANCISCO MARATHON COMPLETED 4:31

Finished my third consecutive run in the San Fran Marathon with my third best time in my seven marathon runs (4:31). As usual, the city and marathon did not disappoint. The race conditions were perfect, 58 degrees, cloudy and a slight mist in the morning. I ran in wave 7 and started at 6:30 am. The highlight of this run is to venture over the Golden Gate Bridge both ways. It is always a reflective moment for a New Yorker to realize where you are - coast to coast. As it was my third SF marathon I anticipated all the sites and knew exactly how to pace myself. Again, the Haight is a "quad buster", at the 20 mile mark you really start to feel the pain. The finish is wonderful on the Embarcadero under the Bay Bridge. The support was excellent and the after race festivities were very comforting, especially the free beer garden sponsored by the local brand - Anchor (which was pretty good).
As far as culinary activities, the highlight was dining at Rocco's Cafe in the SOMA district. This place was featured on "Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives" and I had to try it on this visit. The place is pretty small and friendly. Not a fancy place, more of a "down home joint". I was seated at the counter directly in front of the two chefs who were turning out dishes in spectacular "Benihana" form. I told owner Don Dial that it was one of the most impressive cooking displays I have ever seen. I pasta loaded and the food was terrific. I highly recommend this place if you are visiting SF. It is not a tourist place, but a local restaurant that is a favorite for all. On Saturday I once again spent most of the day at the Ferry Terminal Marketplace sampling great foods. The standout of course is Roli-Roti roasted pork sandwich. For dinner I pasta loaded at Umbria across from the Marriott Courtyard on Second Street. Had two bowls of pasta ragu. I checked out Pier 23 Cafe on Sunday night, but it was very cold and most of the seating was outdoors. Even though they had those big space heaters, it really wasn't taming the cold bay breeze so I passed on this opportunity (this place was also featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives). I wanted the roasted crab at Pier 23 so I gave in and took a cab to the wharf and got a fantastic table at Alioto's with a perfect roasted crab and a spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge at sunset.

LI MARATHON 5/2/10 53:02

This race was run in horrible marathon conditions. With the temperatures reaching over 80 degrees and hot, muggy, humid air, 26.2 miles was quite grueling. Took water at all stops and in the last half was literally emptying bottles over my head to keep cool. I ran slower splits and was able to maintain my pace until mile 21. The last 5 miles was torture, but I was able to finish with a decent kick at the end. My net time of 4:53. Time to recover and then train for San Francisco this summer.

Paul Giamatti "Win, Win" on location - Final tune up for LI Marathon

They are still filming "Win, Win" on Walnut St. in Rockville Centre. During my last training run before Sunday's LI Marathon I ran into the shoot again, but this time they were shooting outside the home that was rented for the location shoot. The scene was from the front door to the the porch and I watched the actual take. You actually here "action" and "cut". Saw the director, Tom McCarthy giving his direction to Giamatti and the girl who probably is playing his daughter and also his son. The shoot concludes with the three of them sitting on the steps of the porch. Very interesting, with all the trucks, lights, screens (filtering the sun), wires, monitors, caterers, and all. Well, back to running. Looking forward to Sunday's race, though the temperature is being forecasted to be around 80 degrees...ouch!
